englischBecause of the right-wing party AfD and the Pegida-movement, the Islam-critical scene in Germany has received much attention in recent years. But many campaigners have been politically active for a much longer time. The survey traces the developments since 9/11 and lets active opponents of Islam have their say. For the first time, the Islam-critical scene is examined with the help of qualitative interviews. Those provide detailed insights into biographies, motivations and goals of anti-Islamic activists. At the same time, it reveals that the campaigners have a similar understanding of Islam as that of Islamist movements, which leads to an "Islamism from outside". The survey contributes to a broader understanding of the Islam-critical scene, which is increasingly influencing public debates in Germany, and thus provides a starting point for political counter-strategies.
