englischEuroscepticism in the the European Union’s (EU) core, neo-fascism at its periphery, fiercely determined separatism in some regions – how do these phenomena go together, and what consequences bears their spread for the EU?
We claim that the different phenomena have in common their discursive foundation in two arguments: A self-other argument, defending culturally defined identities. It is joined by an economic argument against redistribution, aiming to secure the wealth of a community. The respective combination of the two arguments leads to different political projects for Europe, each coming with a particular institutional setup. They feed back on the European level and influence the integration process.
The volume contains case studies on Catalunya and Northern Italy, on Franco-German politics during crisis and conceptions of Europe amongst German citizens, as well as on consequences of these developments for the EU integration process.
Europaskeptizismus in den Gründerstaaten, neofaschistische Bewegungen an den Rändern, zu allem entschlossene Unabhängigkeitsbewegungen in einigen Regionen – wie hängt dies alles in der EU zusammen, und welche Konsequenzen ergeben sich daraus? Die Autoren stellen die These auf, dass den unterschiedlichen Phänomenen je zwei Argumente gemein sind: Immer geht es um ökonomische Verteilungskämpfe, immer um kulturalistische Identitätsargumente. Deren spezifische Kombination ergibt jeweils ein politisches Projekt für Europa, das über die Rückkopplung an die Wähler auch Einfluss auf die europäische Politik hat.
Der Band enthält Fallstudien zu Katalonien und Norditalien, zur deutsch-französischen Europapolitik in der Krise, zum Europabild der deutschen Bevölkerung sowie zu Konsequenzen dieser Entwicklungen für die Europapolitik.
