englischIn the study Jugend und Europa, a model of the effects of intergroup contacts in international youth exchanges is developed on the basis of theorems derived from Allport’s contact hypothesis. The effects of international youth work programmes in which European topics are approached from different angles are compared in the study. Exchanges in the context of school and non-formal settings as well as youth camps approaching intercultural topics without exchange were considered. The factors and conditions that are relevant for the development of a European identity and an active European Citizenship are portrayed. Furthermore, the impacts on the formation of tolerance and personality through international youth exchanges is investigated. Repeatedly conducting surveys over time allowed to identify both short- and long-term impacts.
