englischIn our post-factual era, there hardly seems to be a liberal value that is not subject to doubts. The two greatest challenges to contemporary democracy in particular—neoliberalism and populism—are endangering its promise of free and equal political participation and the ideal of social integration in enlightened societies. In contrast, alternative political beliefs are flourishing, as the debates about post-democracy, radical democracy and republicanism show. In this volume, in the face of these challenges, experts in this field readdress the quintessential questions relating to liberalism: What is liberalism, or at least what should it be, and how can liberalism deal with the current threats to liberal societies without losing its liberality? In doing so, they re-examine and update the achievements of and principal figures in liberalism, try to come to terms with its fundamental values, such as freedom of religion and gender equality, and investigate fundamental concepts, like markets, legitimacy and constitutions, in terms of their liberality.
