englischThis volume covers British trade policy and politics under New Labour. It relies upon established theoretical approaches and carefully selected case studies from the EU’s and the WTO’s trade agenda. Focussing on British trade preferences and the various factors influencing them, it also asks whether and to what degree British governments were able to export their views onto the European or global level.

In this context, opposing interests attached to trade policy by economic interest groups, developmental NGOs, the British Parliament, Whitehall’s bureaucracy and international actors created a dilemma, which New Labour’s governments sought to consolidate. Heterogeneous views not only arose in traditional aspects of trade, like trade in goods, but especially concerning the so-called „new trade agenda“, including, for example, rules on investment or TRIPS and its effects on public health in developing countries. This volume proves to be a valuable and unique contribution to the research on the role of individual member states within the EU’s Common Commercial Policy.
