englischAt first glance, New Harmony appears to be a common American rural town located in the furthest south-western corner of Indiana. However, if you take a closer look, you will find exceptional and unique architectural structures there, such as Richard Meier’s visitors’ centre, the Roofless Church and the Harmonist Labyrinth. In New Harmony you can still experience the presence of the first settlers, the Harmony Society and Robert Owen’s social experiment (1814-1827). Driven by the question of how the legacy of these so-called “intentional communities” has evolved, this local study examines a broad scale of sources and explores the demographic, economic, political and cultural development of New Harmony over the last 200 years. Due to the Harmony Society and Robert Owen’s experiment, New Harmony has been given special opportunities in the course of its history that have helped the town to become both a lovely home for residents and a historic site embraced by visitors from all over the world.
