englischThis study introduces an innovative approach to the historiography of the formative phase of political science in the early Federal Republic of Germany. In doing so, it considers the entire cohort of the founders of this field of study. It explores this generation of scholars by applying analytical criteria and allowing profound insights into the professional self-perception of each of the individuals investigated. Areas of research include their specific views on civic education, their understanding of political science, as well as its relationship towards civic education, and the particular concept of democracy to be taught in civic education.
As a result, the study provides a nuanced picture of the mindset of this founding generation of political scientists. Its results will have a lasting impact on contemporary political science by creating awareness of the fact that, contrary to the belief shared by many political scientists, this scientific discipline has not only served to educate and inform the public in times past, but indeed still performs this function to this very day.
Die Studie stellt eine Innovation in der Fachgeschichtsschreibung über die Gründungsphase der bundesdeutschen Politikwissenschaft dar. Zum einen schließt sie die gesamte Kohorte der Gründergeneration ein. Zum anderen betrachtet sie diese Generation nach analytischen Kriterien, die einen intensiven Einblick in das Professionsverständnis der untersuchten Personen erlauben. Untersucht werden die Einstellungen zur politischen Bildung, die Vorstellungen über Inhalte und Methoden der politischen Bildung, die Auffassungen über die Politikwissenschaft und deren Verhältnis zur politischen Bildung sowie das von der politischen Bildung zu vermittelnde Bild der Demokratie.
Die Studie spiegelt auf diese Weise ein differenziertes Bild des Denkens der Gründergeneration. Ihre Erkenntnisse können auf die Politikwissenschaft der Gegenwart zurückwirken, indem sie das Bewusstsein dafür schärfen, dass diese Wissenschaft eine Bildungs- und Aufklärungsfunktion nicht nur hatte, sondern entgegen dem Verständnis nicht weniger Fachvertreter immer noch hat.
