englischFreedom is obviously an important value in people's lives. After all, freedom means that people can decide for themselves what kind of life they want to lead. However, the inherent paradox of freedom is that it can only be guaranteed if it is also subject to restrictions. The function of the state is therefore to implement prohibitions in order to secure freedom. The question of the legitimisation of this state power, its area of application and its scope, is the core problem of political philosophy. The book introduces the treatment of this question, paying particular attention to the most powerful theories for the justification of the state, the so-called contract theories.
