The book introduces the treatment of this question, paying particular attention to the most powerful theories for the justification of the state, the so-called contract theories.
Freiheit ist offenkundig ein wichtiger Wert im Leben der Menschen. Denn Freiheit bedeutet, dass die Menschen selbst entscheiden können, welche Art von Leben sie denn überhaupt führen möchten. Das inhärente Paradox der Freiheit besteht aber darin, dass sie nur gewährleistet werden kann, wenn sie gleichzeitig Einschränkungen unterliegt. Die Funktion des Staates liegt daher darin, Verbote umzusetzen, um so die Freiheit zu sichern. Die Frage nach der Legitimation dieser staatlichen Gewalt, ihres Anwendungsbereichs und Umfangs, ist das Kernproblem der Politischen Philosophie. Das Buch führt in die Behandlung dieser Frage ein, wobei den wirkmächtigsten Theorien zur Rechtfertigung des Staates, den sogenannten Vertragstheorien, besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird.
