It explains how social, political, economic and environmental factors influence the health of different groups, e.g. men and women, the young and the old, or especially poor people. It shows why health prospects are unequally distributed and why disadvantaged groups fall ill earlier and more frequently in life. This book introduces the most important health problems, explains concepts of health promotion and prevention, and discusses practical intervention strategies for specific areas of activity such as sexual and reproductive health or urban health.

Das Lehrbuch Public Health bringt historische und aktuelle Definitionen, Konzepte, Strategien und Akteure von Gesundheit zusammen. Es wird erklärt, wie soziale, politische, ökonomische und Umweltfaktoren die Gesundheit von verschiedenen Gruppen z.B. von Männern und Frauen, jungen und alten oder besonders armen Menschen beeinflussen. Dabei wird deutlich, warum Gesundheitschancen ungleich verteilt sind und benachteiligte Gruppen früher und öfter im Leben erkranken.
