englischThis book updates Rousseau’s concept of popular sovereignty and therefore provides a radical democratic alternative to the liberal transnational theory of democracy. Whereas the latter responds normatively to globalisation with claims for individual rights and standards of good governance, Rousseau’s radical democratic political philosophy enables us to imagine the re-democratisation of post national citizenship. Rousseau’s radical philosophy is, in contrast to its conservative reception and the legalistic discourse of the European Union, perfectly suited to overcoming the national form of subjectivisation and gives us reasons to hope for more political participation and social equality. This is so because Rousseau conceptualises radical democracy as an extensive claim for collective self-determination which encompasses the mechanisms to (re)produce the collective.
