englischThis analysis focuses on a historically new constellation in international crisis management: the cooperation between the UN and regional organizations in peacekeeping. The study covers main actors, instruments, and innovative mechanisms of cooperation. Based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions related to 19 crisis regions in four continents, the author describes post-cold war cooperation trends both in legal, structural and processual terms. Eight relevant regional organizations (such as AU, EU, NATO, and OAS) are being scrutinized with regard to their peacekeeping impacts and potentials. In addition, the author recalls initiatives from within the UN system for promoting cooperation with regional actors. Under increasingly globalized perceptions in peace and security, the overall assessment points to an even more continuous cooperation between the UN and its regional partners in peacekeeping. In the end, such a development will provide the UN Security Council with more options in this field of international cooperation which still bears the potential of being developed further.
