englischThis anthology on SPD leftists is dedicated to their history and selected actors, from Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels to Rosa Luxemburg, Eduard Bernstein, Rudolf Hilferding, Paul Levi and Viktor Agartz to Willy Brandt, Peter von Oertzen and current generations. Among the portraits are also some deliberately selected SPD leftists who are known to a small circle of experts, such as Anna Siemsen or Paul Hertz, and others who can be rediscovered. Readers can thus focus on different ‘epochs’ and currents of the SPD left and understand its actions and socialist programmes in different phases through comparative analysis and in a biographical way. The SPD left is not a monolithic bloc but, in its respective context, is historically part of and often also the driving force behind the triad of revolutions, leftist movements and radical reformism. This volume succeeds in understanding the continuity and change of SPD leftists from the German Empire through the Weimar Republic and National Socialism to the Federal Republic of Germany.
