englischAt the beginning of the 21st century, answering the question of what constitutes an ideal state and society is once again a matter of pressing concern. The problem is especially highlighted by the horrific and deadly events occurring in failed states such as Iraq, Syria and Libya, some of whose causes can be traced back to the ‘humanitarian intervention’ of Western democracies in those states and to the theocratic nature of Islamic states and societies. This is one reason why examining the theory and practice of China’s state and society throughout history seems necessary, because no other country’s conditions, particularly those which denote a failed state, have probably evoked so much horror over the centuries, and nowhere else has the ruling faction been as equally committed to establishing and maintaining public order.

This book provides a critical overview of Chinese history, which not only takes into account the positive sides of such endeavours but also the ethically unacceptable developments which they and the ruling party’s ruthless and unwavering pursuit of power led to. In addition to traditions such as Confucianism and Taoism, specific circumstances are also relevant; thus, so the book devotes individual chapters to examining both the relationship of the Chinese state and its society to democracy, religion, war and peace, and the reasons for the discrepancy between its humane theories and inhumane practices.
