englischResearch in such a dynamic domain as synthetic biology requires the willingness and the ability to perceive questions on the consequences and the responsibility of science, in order to integrate these questions into one’s own research. For this purpose, a differentiated perception of actual research is necessary, which avoids generalisations and enables ethical assessment. This facilitates concrete responsibility when conducting research, which is a major task of research-related ethics. In the LOEWE-Centre for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO) in Marburg, a model for the gradual ethical assessment of synthetic biology has been developed whose core consists of a dynamic and multidimensional criteriology which leads from the level of description, to dimensions of assessment, to grades of ethical responsibility. Using four case studies, this book illustrates the application of this model in single research projects.
