By exploring the individual film frame, the characters, and its narrative structure, the study illuminates the show’s complex content. For its great thematic scope, sociologists, political scholars, and media scholars have studied “The Wire”. In this case, the approach is based on film studies and hermeneutics. The study unfolds in three thematic areas, ‚aesthetics’, ‚narrative structures’ and ‚starting points for interpretation’.
„The Wire“, eine Kriminalserie in fünf Staffeln und zugleich eine präzise Analyse der amerikanischen Gesellschaft, wird hier auf ihre Erzählstrategien untersucht: Die Studie führt die inhaltliche Komplexität der ambitionierten Fernsehserie zurück auf das konkrete Filmbild, die Figuren und die Dramaturgie. Aufgrund ihrer thematischen Breite wurde „The Wire“ zum Objekt zahlreicher soziologischer, politologischer und medienwissenschaftlicher Studien, deren Erkenntnisse hier zusammengetragen werden. Die Betrachtung erfolgt mit filmwissenschaftlich-hermeneutischem Blick in den Themen-Feldern „Ästhetik“, „Dramaturgie“ und „Deutungsansätze“.
