englischThe series of publications entitled “Staatsverständnisse” focuses on the question of which ideas conceived by past and present political thinkers can be employed to help us understand the modern state.

Peter Häberle is one of the pioneers of liberal leftist procedural constitutional theory. His constitutional theory for an open society states that how citizens approach the constitution determines the scope and influence of the state. Abandoning the theory of the state, he devised and elaborated a constitutional theory for Europe, an unparalleled example of scientific thinking. However, regardless of whether his focus is Basic Law or Europe, his point of departure is always pluralist society. His independent cultural studies approach also expands the narrow legal concept of constitution in a transdisciplinary respect and is proving to be ground-breaking in current political, constitutional and democratic discourse.
