englischFor many Germans, the desire to become a world power was an obvious choice because, at the turn of the century, the German Empire was one of the three leading economies in the world, alongside Great Britain and the USA. However, the First World War ended this phase as the German Empire lost the war and forfeited a large part of its territory and its political, economic and military freedom to act.

After the three wars of unification against Denmark, Austria-Hungary and France, Germany’s state unity was established with the foundation of the Empire as a confederation of princes and the adoption of the constitution. However, the Imperial Constitution of 1871 only provided a rough framework and did not contain a separate section on fundamental rights. It acted more like a framework agreement that needed to be concretised in constitutional practice.

Beyond the text of the constitution, this book addresses other aspects of political, social and economic life as well as the social and cultural side of the Empire. Its interdisciplinary approach is intended to help create a well-rounded picture of the imperial era. Nomos will publish an anthology on the German Empire in 2023, which will shed light on all facets of this first German nation state from an interdisciplinary perspective.

In ten parts, all relevant aspects of the German Empire are dealt with by experts from numerous disciplines. In a final section, three leading German historians and political scientists summarise the findings of this study. An index of names and keywords completes the book.
