englischClimate change is not defined by nature – climate change is a societal problem. Addressing this problem happens under the highly restrictive conditions of an increasingly differentiated, far from transparent society composed of logically discrete function systems, egotistical organisations and capricious interactions. Under these circumstances, climate change is a problem of divergent function systems, organisations with varying agendas and degrees of involvement, and everyday encounters ranging from the dispassionate to the overcommitted that, each in their own way, align and collide as they construct climate change. An understanding of these circumstances allows us to grasp how ‘society’ is beginning to discern ecological problems and is selecting specific ways of addressing them while excluding others. This book assembles both theoretical and empirical contributions which offer analyses at the micro, meso and macro levels.
