englischThe study is dedicated to the question of the importance of the international standards of the European Social Charter in EU primary law and whether the EU institutions take these standards sufficiently into account. It identifies points of rupture where EU institutions contribute to member states falling short of the standards of the European Social Charter. In essence, the study deals with the tension between the economic focus of the European integration and the EU's commitment to minimum social standards. To resolve this tension, the possibility of interpreting and developing EU fundamental rights in the light of the European Social Charter is discussed.
