Well-regarded and much read in the literary Germany of his own day, he is today, unjustly, largely forgotten, although traces of his reception can be found in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Arno Schmidt 2020 is a double anniversary for the poet Franz von Gaudy – 220 years since his birth and 180 since his death – and is also the year in which Gaudy will return to view in the literary world with the first volume of a multipart edition of his selected works. This contains the novellas and stories written during his journeys to Italy in 1835 and 1838-39, and as a critical study edition, provides for the first time a reliable text based on the first printed editions in modernised spelling, and a biographical and cultural description based on the latest sources and research.
Franz von Gaudy (1800–1840) war ein spätromantischer und realistischer Schriftsteller im Vormärz. Er schrieb Prosa – Novellen, Erzählungen, Reiseberichte – sowie Gedichte, Balladen und Romanzen, hatte eine ausgeprägt satirische Ader und war dank seines geschulten Sprachgefühls ein ausgezeichneter Übersetzer aus dem Französischen und Polnischen. Zu seiner Zeit im literarischen Deutschland geachtet und viel gelesen, ist er heute zu Unrecht weitgehend vergessen, obwohl Spuren seiner Rezeption bis zu Friedrich Nietzsche oder Arno Schmidt reichen. Mit dem 220. Geburtstag und dem 180. Todestag des Dichters Franz von Gaudy gibt es gleich ein doppeltes Gedenken im Jahr 2020, in dem Gaudy mit dem Eröffnungsband einer neuen mehrbändigen Auswahlausgabe wieder greifbar in die literarische Welt zurückkehren soll. Er umfasst die bei den Italienreisen 1835 und 1838/39 entstandenen Novellen und Erzählungen und bietet in einer kritischen Studienausgabe erstmals einen zuverlässigen Text nach den Erstdrucken in modernisierter Orthographie sowie eine biographische und kulturgeschichtliche Einordnung auf aktuellem Quellen- und Forschungsstand.
