englischCalls to decolonise thinking and scholarship have become ever more insistent in recent years and have now reached European universities. The present volume seeks to explain why philosophy also needs to undergo a process of decolonisation, and what such a process might mean for research and teaching in the subject. A central point is to re-examine the long-denied involvement of European philosophy in European expansion and colonialism. Against this background, the book examines issues around the development of academically-based “racial theory” in philosophy and the Eurocentric constructions of history in the 18th and 19th centuries. It suggests approaches to overcoming Eurocentric philosophy and asks how ethical and epistemic responsibility can be taken in the process of decolonising thought.
