This little book tells the story of the important cathedral city of Hildesheim with help from the collections of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library in Hanover. The library holds many thousands of pages of manuscripts relating to Hildesheim from the middle ages to the 18th century; they include two particular treasures: the ‘Aufschwörungsbuch’ of the Cathedral Chapter and the Esther Roll by the Hildesheim artist Leib Katz Poppers. The library also contains all the books published in Hildesheim since the mid-20th century, some tens of thousands of volumes. And there are older novels and stories where Hildesheim plays a role. Sample extracts from these are reprinted and – like the other texts – are seen by Georg Ruppelt, a native of Lower Saxony, as a small declaration of love for Hildesheim.
Geschichte und Kultur alter Städte werden seit Jahrhunderten in Archiven, Bibliotheken und Museen dokumentiert. In diesem Büchlein wird von der bedeutenden Bischofsstadt Hildesheim erzählt, und zwar auf der Grundlage von Beständen der Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Bibliothek in Hannover. Viele tausend Seiten von Handschriften mit Hildesheim-Bezug vom Mittelalter bis ins 18. Jahrhundert werden in der Bibliothek verwahrt; zu ihnen gehören zwei besondere Kostbarkeiten: das Aufschwörungsbuch des Hildesheimer Domkapitels und die Esther-Rolle des Hildesheimer Künstlers Leib Katz Poppers. Doch auch die gesamte Produktion Hildesheimer Verlage seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit vielen Zehntausenden von Büchern steht in der Bibliothek den Lesern zur Verfügung. Und es finden sich in ihr ältere Romane und Erzählungen, in denen Hildesheim eine Rolle spielt. Daraus werden anschauliche Textauszüge abgedruckt, die – wie auch die übrigen Texte – der gebürtige Niedersachse Georg Ruppelt als kleine Liebeserklärung an Hildesheim versteht.
