englischThe history of European unification was at no time a uniform and harmonious process, but rather an interplay between crisis phenomena and integration thrusts. With the Relance Européenne (1954/55-1958) and the launching of the Single Market (1985-1993), this volume focuses on two periods in which European unification, after intermittent setbacks, experienced a lasting concretisation. The path to the Treaties of Rome and the Maastricht Treaty is treated comparatively from the perspective of its three main protagonists: Great Britain, France and the Federal Republic of Germany. Their domestic and foreign policy motives as well as the development of their European policy in the context of East-West relations are presented in a readable manner on the basis of a wide range of literature and sources.
