englischFriedrich de la Motte Fouqué published three great biographical works in the 1820s: the life of his grandfather General Fouqué and the two-volume biography of Joan of Arc (Vols 21 ad 22.1-2 of this edition) were followed in 1828 by Fouqué’s last major work in the field of biography, the military appraisal of Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Philipp von Rüchel (1754–1823). Fouqué was able to make use of the handwritten notes of Colonel von Brixen, General Rüchel’s long-serving adjutant. Fouqué had known the General, then still a Major, during his own young days in Sacrow. It is also a fact that, as a 17-year-old, Fouqué took part in the Rhine Campaign under Rüchel’s command. This was reason enough for the author to create a monument, if a posthumous one, to the respected General of his younger days, which has now been reissued for the first time in nearly two hundred years as a reprint of the first edition.
