The first part looks at the theoretical background to the emperor’s writings – their view of philosophy and knowledge in relation to practical ethics and against the background of stoicism. In the second part the structure of the Meditations and the rationale of the individual chapters are analysed from the perspectives of rhetoric, philosophy and textual criticism. By examining the means with which Marcus Aurelius sought to achieve the aim of his text, this study contributes to an interpretation which is original and at the same time takes account of the unique quality of the meditations.
Welche Idee der Erkenntnis und der moralischen Fortentwicklung ermöglicht es, zu schreiben und sich dabei an sich selbst zu wenden? Und welcher Stil wird die Worte kennzeichnen, die man an den intimsten aller möglichen Gesprächspartner richtet? Mit solchen Fragen beschäftigt sich das vorliegende Buch im Lichte der "Selbstbetrachtungen" Mark Aurels. Im ersten Teil werden die theoretischen Voraussetzungen der Schrift des Kaisers untersucht, nämlich ihre Sicht auf Philosophie und Erkenntnis im Verhältnis zur praktischen Ethik und vor dem Hintergrund des Stoizismus. Im zweiten Teil werden die Struktur der Selbstbetrachtungen und die Argumentation der einzelnen Kapitel unter rhetorischen, philosophischen und textkritischen Gesichtspunkten analysiert. Insofern sie die Mittel untersucht, mit denen Mark Aurel den Zweck seines Textes erreichen wollte, möchte diese Arbeit zu einer Interpretation beitragen, die gleichermaßen originell ist und die besondere Eigenart der "Selbstbetrachtungen" beachtet.
