englischThroughout his life Jeremias Gotthelf was dedicated to the improvement of elementary schooling. He argued for modern school buildings, demanded professional teacher training and was concerned about the provision of contemporary teaching materials. Educational reforms in Bern had to begin with an appropriate salary for teachers and lead to a recognition of their social role of educating pupils to become responsible citizens and Christians. These demands pervade the 20 texts in this volume, originally published between 1284 and 1829, the speeches and previously unpublished petitions to the authorities as much as two published essays and a satirical dialogue.
