The work contributes from an artistic and cultural perspective to the study of the pre-classical cultures, in particular the first Mesoamerican high culture, that of the Olmec, and from an epistemological perspective to the development of the understanding of death. Its significance in terms of the study of religion is in the role of the recognition of death in the development of religion and the thematic role of death in religion, with a major role in the shaping and origins of religion attributed to the shamanic ideology passed down from the period of the Old Stone Age.
Das Buch befasst sich mit der Kunst und Ikonographie ausgewählter Werke der präklassischen Kulturen Mesoamerikas, wobei der Tod und sein Verständnis eine zentrale Rolle spielt. Die Arbeit stellt einen kunst- und kulturhistorischen Beitrag zur Erforschung der präklassischen Kulturen, insbesondere der ersten Hochkultur Mesoamerikas, der olmekischen Kultur, und einen erkenntnistheoretischen Beitrag zur Entwicklung des Todesverständnisses dar. Ihre religionswissenschaftliche Bedeutung liegt in der auslösenden Rolle der Todeserkenntnis für die Entwicklung der Religion und der thematischen Rolle des Todes in der Religion; eine starke mitformende und religionsvorbereitende Bedeutung kommt dabei der aus der Altsteinzeit tradierten schamanistischen Ideologie zu.
