englisch Volume 6 of the annual Jahrbuch Musik und Gender, edited by Katharina Hottmann (Hamburg), traces performance history contexts of songs in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Because of their broad social and stylistic spectrum, songs can be found in more varied social and musical contexts than probably any other musical phenomenon. This makes the history of song a wide-ranging field for researchers, including those interested in gender history. These seven studies revolve around different characteristics of song practice from the perspective of cultural history. They cover a spectrum from the intimacy of domestic music-making to public concert performances, and examine songs in the context of stage music and on record. In all these contexts the focus is on gender-specific or cross-gender constructions of authorship, artistic identities and fields of resonance.
