englischRichard Wagner spent a total of 20 years of his restless life in Dresden. The many impressions an influences which he received in his childhood and later as conductor of one of the leading German orchestras have never been given the attention they deserve in the literature about Wagner. This may be in part due to the disparaging picture which Wagner painted of his politically compromised workplace in his autobiography. This volume, based on the Symposium “Richard Wagner in Dresden – Richard Wagner and Dresden” held to mark the composer’s 200th birthday, takes stock for the first time of Dresden’s role in Wagner’s life and work. Topics examined and re-evaluated include Wagner’s personal networking with musicians and artists, and the striking development of his music-dramatic technique, especially in terms of instrumentation, which would have been scarcely possible without his work with the royal orchestra.
