englischVirchow’s prehistoric discoveries are among his lesser-known pioneering achievements. Volume 54 brings together works from one thematic group: Virchow’s prehistoric research on the Caucasus in transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, and in particular on the burial-ground at Koban in the Northern Caucasus, an area of contemporary political relevance. The editor has also included in this volume some of Virchow’s individual essays closely linked to this theme.

The Caucasus, an impressive 1100km mountain landscape between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea, is the least-known area of Virchow’s work on prehistory. His study on Koban – which gave the definitive name to the “Koban Culture” – is one of the first “comparative archaeological studies” in prehistory. Virchow’s innovative role in the study of the burial ground has never received the recognition which it deserves as an achievement in the history of scholarship. This volume seeks to rectify that.

The editor Christian Andree has for the first time published this work with a scholarly and historical introduction and detailed indexes of subjects, names and places.
