His comments on the necessity of exact skull and body measurements using standard procedures have been further developed in the science of biometrics, and remain relevant today. The editor, Christian Andree, has written the first introduction to the work to cover the history of scholarship in this field (including the influence of the work and some additional texts) and has prepared comprehensive indexes of subjects, literature and personal, ethnic and geographical names.
Mit seiner 1857 erschienenen und hier zum ersten Male in erweiterter Form nachgedruckten Abhandlung über den Schädelgrund ging Virchow einer uralten und bislang nicht abschließend geklärten wissenschaftlichen Frage nach, nämlich welches Verhältnis „zwischen der äusseren Erscheinung des Kopfes und den geistigen Eigenthümlichkeiten besteht“. Heute verteilen sich Virchows Forschungsansätze zu diesem Thema neben der Anthropologie auf viele medizinische Disziplinen: Embryologie, Neuro-Anatomie, Neuro-Pathologie, Neuro-Pädiatrie, Neuro-Radiologie, Psychiatrie, Psychologie, Neurologie, Neurochirurgie, Neuro-Orthopädie, Gentechnik sowie Veterinärmedizin, Zoologie, Philosophie und Ästhetik. Seine Hinweise auf die Notwendigkeit von exakten Schädel- und Körpermessungen mittels Standardverfahren sind in der Wissenschaft der Biometrie weiterentwickelt worden und nach wie vor aktuell.
