englischThis volume contains the missing link of all Virchow research to date. Transcribed from the original manuscript of 1848/49 and made accessible by detailed indexes, it reproduces the postscript of an aspiring Bamberg physician who took down the first lecture Virchow gave as a professor in Würzburg. The value of volume 18 of the Virchow-Gesamtausgabe founded by Christian Andree is that we have here Virchow's first lecture, which is the starting point of a lecture series of more than 50 years. Virchow never published a textbook of pathological anatomy in his entire life, because the progress in knowledge of the subject of pathology developed by him and others in his time was so rapid that he was only able to present it directly to his listeners in his lectures, while a longer book-writing process could never have taken into account the many current developments. Numerous illustrations supplement the text from the postscript.
