englischThe significant communal political work of Rudolf Virchow has never been researched or presented in context before. As part of the research project to get to know, critically describe and evaluate all areas of life and activity of one of the most important scientific personalities of the modern era, the author, Christian Andree, has already begun this investigation in the divided Berlin before the publication of the first volume of the Virchow-Gesamtausgabe. From 1859 to 1902, Virchow was a member of the Berlin City Assembly. In addition, from 1862 to 1902 he was a member of the Prussian Landtag (House of Representatives) and from 1880 to 1893 he was a member of the German Reichstag. His city council activities ran alongside his numerous scientific undertakings and teaching commitments, excavation activities, political work for the Progress Party, and organizational work for a larger number of scientific and humanitarian associations. In addition to summaries of the minutes of meetings of the city council, which have been preserved in difficult-to-read German handwriting, the work Rudolf Virchow als Stadtverordneter Berlins (Rudolf Virchow as a City Councilor of Berlin) provides summaries of contemporary daily newspaper reports and thus decades of research work in documents.
