englischRudolf Virchow worked as a university teacher and lecturer in pathology for over 50 years. If we look at this period and at what survives in terms of handwritten reports, it is initially surprising that relatively few handwritten students’ notes survive from the later years. This volume is concerned with the lectures from the middle period of Virchow’s teaching activities, a time when he was already burdened with work from his political and anthropological-ethnological-prehistoric activities, but when his sense of duty did not allow him to neglect giving several lectures every semester on pathological anatomy as well as special lectures and courses on pathology. The transcript was made by the medical student Paul Styx and consists of two parts in a single volume. It was made at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Institut (where Virchow had also studied) in the winter semester 1874/75 and contains: 1. The “Lectures on General Pathological Anatomy given by Professor Dr Rudolf Virchow in the winter semester 1874/75”, “End of these lectures on 5 March 1875, 3.00 in the afternoon.” 2. The Lectures on the General Pathology of the Central Nervous System given by Professor Dr Rudolf Virchow in the winter semester 1874/75 (public).” Christian Andree has transcribed the original manuscript and compiled a comprehensive index to the book.
