englischThe terms „intervention“ and „interference“ have been well known for quite some time in international politics and in international law. International disputes are almost always, at least partially, accompanied by the allegation of an unlawful intervention in domestic matters. For well over sixty years international law experts have struggled to clearly define what actions involving allegations of intervention and interference actually amount to concrete international law violations.

The number of claims concerning the violation of the non-intervention rule in the area of customary practices between states is inversely proportional to the number of discussions dealing with the criteria and legal consequences of an infringement. Hence the architecture of the rule and its criteria remain unclear. This book aims to fill this gap and answer the question regarding how and where international law draws the line between lawful interference and unlawful intervention in domestic matters.
