Its underlying aim is to study the various historical concepts of opera as a communicative art form, predominantly from a textual perspective. The works it addresses range from operas about Orpheus from 1600 to D’Annunzio’s draft of a dramatic theory on the head of Medusa in his novel Il fuoco of 1900.
Symbolisch unter die Gestalten des Orpheus und der Medusa gefasst, beleuchtet dieses Buch konträre Poetiken der italienischen Oper dreier Jahrhunderte. Dabei werden neben theoretischen Texten vor allem die Librettodichtung, aber auch die Musik und die Gesangskunst unterschiedlicher Epochen in den Blick genommen. Die Leitfrage richtet sich auf die historisch verschiedenen Konzepte der Oper als intermediales Kunstwerk, dominant vom Text her betrachtet. Von den Orpheus-Opern ab 1600 reicht der Bogen bis zu D’Annunzios Entwurf einer Theaterpoetik des Medusenhaupts in dem Künstlerroman Il fuoco aus dem Jahr 1900.
