Historical studies which, at the same time, contribute to our understanding of the present are published in the series entitled ‘Historischen Grundlagen der Moderne’ (The Historical Foundations of Modernity). Although not exclusively, this series focuses on the following main subject areas:
• Historical research into Democracy
• Modern regional history
• The history of dictatorships and authoritarian regimes
• International history
The series is not bound to a programmatic concept of modernity. By clearly and firmly focusing on topical questions related to social, economic, cultural and political history, it reflects the variety of methods used in current research and the vast array of subjects that research addresses. Edited by renowned historians, the series contains academic studies on contemporary history since the 18th century, which examine the historical foundations and development of the present, and reflect on problems and contradictions in the modern world.

The series of publications entitled ‘Media History’ focuses on the producers, consumers, contents and functions of the media from ancient times until today. It positions itself within a culturally, sociologically and historically expanded media history and therefore reflects the history of the media as dependent on the context of its emergence and effects, and in relation to processes of social communication and self-understanding.
Monographs and anthologies in German, English and French can be published in this series.

Revolutions Past and Present
Edited by Prof. Dr. Andreas Fahrmeir, Prof. Dr. Alexander Gallus and Prof. Dr. Klaus Schlichte
By focusing on the phenomenon and instances of revolution, this series of books endeavours to link the field of history with politics and other humanities and social science subjects. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of revolutions that have occurred in history therefore lie at the heart of the volumes in this series: from political, social and cultural upheaval since the early modern period in Europe until today. The editors of the series also welcome case studies, comparative analyses and works which are more heavily theory based. Furthermore, the series aims to portray the dynamics of rapid changes in political systems and their economic, social and cultural aspects as well as their regional and international contexts and effects.

Based on its underlying principle of including works which employ diverse methods and cover a variety of subjects, the series of publications contains internationally comparable monographs and anthologies with a specific focus on all subjects related to European social and economic history, studies on individual European countries which deal with their subject from a European perspective, and works on the history of supranational European institutions or even on the history of international cooperation.
