Architectural terminology still refers to a free-standing pavilion open on several sides, originally located in palace gardens, as a kiosk. From the 18th century onwards, it began to evolve from an exquisite building into a commonplace shop. It was not until the twentieth century that the kiosk finally evolved into the ordinary kiosk that we see all over the world today. But how will the kiosk develop in the future? Does the kiosk even have a future? Habilitated media scientist Arthur Engelbert answers these questions and presents a new perspective on the kiosk with the Tokyo Reading Kiosk.
Seit der ägyptischen Antike hat der Kiosk zahlreiche kulturgeschichtliche Wandlungen erfahren. Bis heute wird in der Architektursprache ein frei stehender, nach mehreren Seiten offener Pavillon, der sich ursprünglich in Palastgärten befand, als Kiosk bezeichnet. Ausgehend vom 18. Jahrhundert begann die Entwicklung vom exquisiten Bauwerk zum mondialen Verkaufsladen. Vor allem im 20. Jahrhundert wird dieser Schritt zum gewöhnlichen, weltweit verbreiteten Kiosk schließlich vollzogen. Doch wie wird sich der Kiosk in Zukunft entwickeln? Hat der Kiosk überhaupt eine Zukunft? Der habilitierte Medienwissenschaftler Arthur Engelbert beantwortet diese Fragen und stellt mit dem Tokioter Lesekiosk eine neue Perspektive für den Kiosk vor.
