englischLogos = Word? This traditional translation at the beginning of the Gospel of John falls short. In 500 BC, early Greek thinker Heraclitus defined Logos as the universal basic principle that creates and guides everything. It marks the ancient Greek path "From Myth to Logos" and thus the first enlightenment in Europe.

John the Evangelist took up this idea and thus invited his philosophically educated Greek contemporaries to read his gospel. This in turn is an indicator of the fundamental interweaving of the New Testament with Greek culture. Conceived as ultimate meaning and supreme reason, the Logos term broadens our horizon even today and helps us rediscover the Bible.
