englischKäthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) gave aesthetic form to human suffering and social injustice. Early on, she sought to give a voice through her art to those who were often marginalised and overlooked in society, such as women and children. Her artworks, which particularly advocated peace in the aftermath of the upheaval of World War I (1914–1918), continue to inspire people worldwide. Although Käthe Kollwitz is widely recognised as a significant artist of the 20th century, less attention has been paid to her early years. This early artistic work is also of great interest as it laid the foundations for her lifelong commitment to social and political activity.
