Only a few years later the NPD made it into the state parliament of Saxony and Mecklenburg-Hither Pomerania. The whole party was on the rise, gaining more and more votes, especially in East Germany. Against the backdrop of the belied collective expectations after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the global economic crisis and the consequent so called “losers of modernization”, the electoral success of the NPD was an enormous challenge to the established parties. This blurred political situation brings up the question: Which motivation drove the East German voters to vote for an unconstitutional party like the NPD? Maximilian Kreter offers a theoretically well substantiated, empirical analysis of the NPD-voters’ motivations in East Germany during the electoral heydays of the NPD between 2005 and 2011.
Im Jahr 2000 gab der damalige Bundesvorsitzende der NPD, Udo Voigt, die Parole „Das Reich ist unser Ziel, unser Weg die NPD“ aus. Nur wenige Jahre später zog seine Partei in die Landtage von Sachsen und Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ein und konnte bundesweit, vor allem aber in Ostdeutschland, deutliche Stimmengewinne verzeichnen. Der rasante Aufstieg der NPD in den neuen Bundesländern stellte die Politik vor große Herausforderungen im Umgang mit der Partei und ihren Wählern, da sich angesichts der enttäuschten Erwartungen nach der Wiedervereinigung und einer globalen Wirtschaftskrise neben vermeintlichen den Wendeverlierern zunehmend auch die (gefühlte) Modernisierungsverlierer der NPD zuwandten.
Doch was bewegte die Wähler wirklich, ihr Kreuz bei der NPD zu machen? In einer theoretisch umfangreich fundierten, empirischen Analyse entschlüsselt Maximilian Kreter die Wahlmotive der NPD-Wähler in Ostdeutschland während der elektoralen Hochphase von 2005 bis 2011.
