englischHow do people react to other opinions in online social networks? And how can public opinion be manipulated online with the help of social bots? These questions are of outstanding relevance due to the extensive shift of the public sphere into digital spaces caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on empirical findings from psychological and political science studies and network research, an agent-based model is developed to provide possible answers. In doing so, it is shown that the very factors that enable majority consensus can also facilitate the manipulation of the digital public.
