englischThe representation of the 'Arab woman' in Western discourse occurs dualistically - either as a victim of repressive structures or as an eroticised-imagined harem lady. Colonial continuities are thus still evident today. Based on Lila Abu-Lughod's critique anchored in postcolonial theory, Meret Jacob-Lakrimdi exploratively analyses the Algerian colonial context and counters this dualism with an alternative: the memories of Zohra Drif, independence fighter and member of the Armée de Libération Nationale. The results of this study are compatible with other disciplines and mark interesting research perspectives for critical Middle East studies.
