In this first nationwide survey, over 400 students of Islamic Studies provide information about their study motivation, career goals and views on Islam. Germany's future experts on Islam can thus be described more closely for the first time. The study demonstrates the importance of personal convictions and presuppositions in the humanities, and how these become apparent in relation to Islam. The survey was inspired by ongoing disputes over the purpose of German Islamic Studies and the appropriate attitude towards Islam within the discipline.
The author holds an MA in Islamic Studies and is doing her doctorate on the consequences of the ISIS period in Northern Iraq.
Wer studiert heute in Deutschland Islamwissenschaft – und warum? In dieser ersten bundesweiten Umfrage geben über 400 Studierende der Islamwissenschaft Auskunft über ihre Studienwahlgründe, Berufsziele und Ansichten zum Islam. Damit können Deutschlands zukünftige Islam-Experten erstmals genauer beschrieben werden. Die Studie thematisiert die Bedeutung von persönlichen Einstellungen und Vorannahmen in den Geisteswissenschaften, und wie diese beim Thema Islam zum Tragen kommen. Anlass für die Untersuchung sind anhaltende Debatten über den Auftrag der deutschen Islamwissenschaft und die angemessene Haltung zum Islam in dieser Disziplin.
Die Autorin hat selbst Islamwissenschaft studiert und promoviert zu den Folgen der IS-Zeit im Nordirak.
