englischThis book is devoted to Iamblichus of Chalcis in Coele-Syria, who plays a pivotal role in the history of late ancient philosophy. His importance extends beyond simple labels, such as 'theurgist' or 'mysteries philosopher', and lies principally in his readiness to innovate doctrinally and the undoubted profundity of his thought. These facts, together with his firm anchorage in the late Platonist scholastic tradition, explain why Iamblichus' contribution to important philosophical issues has been so influential over the centuries. His ideas concerning the predication of the categories, free will, mathesis universalis etc. remained of great interest not only to his immediate successors, but also to mediaeval and early modern thinkers.
