englischThe idea of ›popularity‹ is rarely traced back beyond the 20th century and into the discourses of the time around or before 1800. Nevertheless, questions of popularity and the popularization of knowledge already form an integral part of Enlightenment debates in the 18th century: My study traces the discussions of ›popularity‹ into theological, philosophical, and rhetorical contexts in order to describe the early history of this concept in relation to Enlightenment aesthetics. Special attention is given to the so-called ›ars popularis‹ and its role within the literary feud between Leipzig and Zurich.

»There is, then, a great deal to be learnt from this book. It rests on impressively thorough knowledge of often obscure Enlightment texts. Its bibliography is up to date and valuable. It is not itself an example of "Popularität", but is clearly aimed at specialists.«
