englischThis volume celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Revised Mannheim Rhine Act of 1868, which implemented the freedom of shipping on the river Rhine. After centuries of disputes over prerogatives and influences, and a tenacious struggle over the last remaining tolls and staple privilege, the Mannheim Rhine Act finally installed a common administrative and juridical infrastructure to regulate shipping as well as the maintenance of the Rhine and its watersides. The Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine, which crafted the Mannheim Act and presides over its implementation, acts as a role model for international organisations in the area of economic, administrative, and political collaboration to this day.

Vor 150 Jahren hat die Revidierte Mannheimer Rheinakte endgültig die Freiheit der Flussschifffahrt auf dem Rhein geschaffen. Nach jahrhundertelangem Streit um Vorrechte und Einflussnahmen und einem zähen Ringen um die letzten Zölle und Stapelprivilegien konnte so eine einheitliche Verwaltung und Rechtsprechung und eine gemeinsame Pflege des Stromes und seiner Uferläufe erreicht werden. Die Zentralkommission für die Rheinschifffahrt, die diese Akte ausgearbeitet hat und umsetzt, gilt bis heute als beispielhaft für internationale Organisationen im Bereich wirtschaftlicher, administrativer und politischer Zusammenarbeit.
