englischThe liability of states for deep seabed mining under the international law of the sea becomes rapidly more important due to the increasing interest of the community of states in the exploitation of the mineral resources of the deep seabed. This applies in particular against the backdrop of the protection of the marine environment and the status of the deep sea bed and its resources as common heritage of mankind.

The book analyses the requirements, legal consequences and particularities of the liability of states under the international law of the sea and the customary international law of state responsibility. It starts with the extensive duties of states under the rules for deep seabed mining of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which ensue in particular from the participation of states in the licensing of deep seabed mining ventures. Regarding the German legislation the book illustrates the German Deep Seabed Mining Act and examines its conformity under international law.

»eine gelungene Einführung in das Rechtsregime des Tiefseebergbaus... kann wesentlich dazu beitragen, Klarheit über die Haftungsfragen zu gewinnen.«
