englischThis study provides an innovative and systematic comparison of the activities of the United States and the European Union in promoting democracy, using their support for Tunisia, a country often hailed as the Arab Spring’s success story, as an example. It examines strategies, methods and instruments that were used by both external actors in all phases of the Tunisian democratisation process. In addition to comparing the patterns in their foreign policy behaviour, the study also examines how both actors dealt with conflicting objectives that arose in their policymaking. Overall, the book’s analysis suggests a very personalised, short-term and pragmatic approach on the part of the US and a much less personalised, more calculated and longer-term approach on the part of the EU.
