englischTeaming up in „boys versus girls“ is popular on playgrounds. However, in competitive sports this measure is never applied: Sport promises equality and aims to offer a level playing field. To provide this level playing field, equality in form of fair chance seems to justify numerous differentiations by means of discrimination grounds in sports. For female athletes, the level playing field grants a gender-segregated competition in order to ensure a fair chance in sporting events. But segregation does not necessarily provide equal opportunity. On the contrary, segregation often creates and perpetuates differences and stereotypes. And as sports seem to rely on the strict separation of female athletes from men as the only valid proxy, it still struggles to find the "right" category for athletes that fall outside the binary system of male and female. Does the notion of Fair Play correspond to the sporting occurrence of the principle of equality?
